Ice Storm 2006 Pictures

The storm began Dec. 29th, just a week after the first dose of freezing rain that took out many tree branches. The storm's effects left tens of thousands of Central Nebraskans without power, destroyed trees, snapped power poles like twigs, brought down many power lines, and made traveling extremely dangerous. Falling ice continued to cause damage as the thawing process began. Additionally, below freezing temperatures posed a threat to people and homes without power. Shelters in Axtell were set up at Mosaic - Bethphage Mission and at the Community Hall, while other people found shelter with family members or neighbors who had power due to the use of generators. Power was returned to most of Axtell on the evening of Jan. 3, 2007. Damage estimates reached over $200 million for the state, and the power outage affects will last for months to come.
